A shortage of health facilities in Queenstown is not new. This paper outlines some of the health inequities which have existed for many years and most of which still exist.

Population growth, ageing infrastructure, limited access to treatment and increased demand have left the district woefully short of the level services which are needed.  Did you know that in 2025 more than 70% of all the people in New Zealand who have to travel more than 2 hours to access base hospital facilities live in the Otago Central Lakes District.

This article from ODT in July 2025 suggests that the concerns raised in the 2011 paper still exist and have been exacerbated by a lack of planning and progress since. We need a solution to these issues!
